As the world around us becomes more chaotic, human beings have a natural tendency to search for something that will help us get some semblance of stability in our lives.  We may look for this in our relationships, hobbies, causes, jobs and especially our investments.  In fact, one of the great ironies of life is that many of us want to believe that we are adventurous and willing to take risks, when in fact the opposite is true – we crave stability, reliability and predictability.

Why is this the case? Why do we want to believe that we are capable of stepping out of our comfort zones and take on that new adventure when we engage in behaviours that stop us from doing so – like procrastination, self-doubt and so on.  The answer is fear.  Fear allows to hang on to the familiarity of the past and prevents us from embarking on the journey of self-discovery and leading a more fulfilling life.  We hold ourselves back from applying for a new job, moving to a new city, making new friendships or learning about new things because of a host of reasons.

Sometimes we do this because of past experiences – a failed relationship, studied a course that wasn’t right for us or investing in that “sure thing” that never really took off.  Quite often, it’s simply reinforcing our human need for control over everything we do, although we know that this is impossible to achieve.  We are creatures of habit and the predictable is preferable to the unknown.  Staying in our comfort zone allows us to stay safe, or so we think.

We often have this approach to investing.  Taking a step to invest in something that breaks the mould and isn’t part of the usual investment “mix” can be scary.  This is especially the case when some so-called expert commentators actively discourage you from doing so.  Some questions and doubt begin to arise such as where do I go to get the right information and who can I trust?  How do I know that I will get those returns?  Will they be there to help me when I want to off-load the investment?
